Briefly

Russell Knight is the senior beef industry analyst in the Animal Products and Cost of Production (APCOP) Branch of the Market and Trade Economics Division (MTED). He is a principal contributor to beef production forecasts in USDA’s monthly World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates and provides industry analysis in the monthly ERS Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook report. Russell also does research on the beef and cattle sector.

Background

Russell has worked at ERS since 2017, with a primary focus on analyzing the beef industry and supporting beef and cattle research. Before ERS, he was a Foreign Service Officer at the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service and an agricultural statistician at the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. Russell completed his graduate training at Virginia Tech, where he evaluated export taxes on soybeans in Argentina. Growing up, he was awarded the American FFA Degree for significant accomplishments in his supervised agricultural experiences raising Shorthorn beef cattle on his family’s farm in western Ohio.

Education

Russell received an M.S. in Agricultural Economics from Virginia Tech. He also holds a B.S. degree in Agribusiness and Applied Economics from The Ohio State University.
